WASH Alliance programme Benin

The WASH Alliance programme promotes access to sanitation, hygiene and safe drinking water for marginalised groups in the four departments of Northern Benin. PRACTICA focuses on strengthening private water operators and manual drilling enterprises. The main interest of manual drilling is to allow small remote villages (around 200 households) to get safe water, as those are not included in the big national schemes for water access.

Goals

  • Strenghtening local enterprises in the WASH sector to increase sustainable access to safe drinking water in remote areas.

Activities

  • Identification of improved water metering tools to strengthen the technical management of private water operators
  • Raising awareness on the potential of manual well drilling to provide safe drinking water to remote villages
  • Training local workshops and manual drilling enterprises

Results

  • An outlined test methodology and comparative study to assess the performance of improved water metering tools
  • Selection and intensive training of two metal workshops on construction and maintenance of rota sludge kits
  • Training of four small enterprises on manual well drilling and pump installation
  • Benin soil sample training
  • Benin sludging
  • Benin Water meter
