Manual drilling field training Medair South Sudan

Medair South Sudan ordered their own emergency drilling kit for use in their program in Renk. To guarantee a good quality of work, PRACTICA provided a hands-on training on manual drilling using the rotary jetting technique.

Using the manual drilling to construct boreholes, lowers the cost of conventional drilling and overcomes challenges in accessibility and logistics. It furthermore improves the quality of work initially done by hand dug wells.

Goals

To provide hands-on training on manual drilling using the rotary jetting technique. This will be implemented through field work to drill a number of new wells in locations close to Renk town. Following the training, the participants should have sufficient experience and skills to continue drilling until the next planned theory follow-up training.

Activities

  • Delivery of rotary jetting kit (produced in the Netherlands)
  • Hands-on field training, including field work to drill a number of new wells in location close to Renk town
  • Reporting on training + recommendations for Medair on future steps
  • Follow-up training focusing on quality improvement of well drilling and installation procedures

Budget

€25.000 for a rotary jetting kit + two field trainings

Results

  • Training participants are familiar with the rotary jetting equipment kit and know how to maintain it in good working order
  • Two additional drill bits are added to the rotary jetting kit in order to get better drilling results in Renk region
  • Medair is planning to utilize the maual drilling technology in other parts of South Sudan
