As many farmers all over the world depend on some form of irrigation to secure their crops throughout the different growing seasons, diesel and petrol pumpsets are very common in those areas where shallow groundwater is being used for irrigation. Farmers in developing countries, for different reasons generally prefer diesel pumpsets. However, the diesel pumpset currently on the market are not particularly suitable for those farmers with smaller plots of land. To support those farmers, PRACTICA is developing a small, cheap and fuel efficient 0,7hp multi fuel 2-stroke diesel engine.
In 2008, extensive performance testing has been done on prototypes of this engine and design improvements have been made. Within this R&D process, based on the 2008 results and further testing that is planned for 2009, a decision will be made whether to continue with the development of this specific design of a small, low-cost and fuel efficient pumpset for small scale irrigation.
